Long ago, there was a farmer. Every day he worked in his field, and it was very exhausting.
One day, while he was working, he suddenly saw a rabbit running by at full speed. The rabbit was running so fast that it crashed into a tree beside the field and died on the spot. The farmer was overjoyed, picked up the rabbit, and went home.
The next day, the farmer didn’t go to work in his field. Every day he sat waiting beside that tree, hoping more rabbits would crash into it and die. But no matter how many days passed, he never again found a rabbit that had killed itself against the tree.
Because he neglected the rice plants in his field, they all withered and dried up. Everyone mocked the farmer, calling him a man who wanted profit without any effort.
Meaning of the idiom
守株待兔 (guarding the tree, waiting for a rabbit) — it means waiting to gain a reward for free by hoping for a lucky accident, instead of putting in your own effort and hard work.
Let’s try using 守株待兔:
- 我们不能守株待兔，要努力学习。
We can’t just wait for luck — we have to study hard.
- 你不要守株待兔，快去工作。
Don’t sit around waiting for luck — go and get to work.
- 成功靠努力，不是守株待兔。
Success comes from effort, not from waiting for luck.
