Once upon a time, a man planted a bamboo tree. He carefully chose good soil for the bamboo seed and planted it. Every day he watered it and took good care of it.
But in the first year, nothing appeared above the ground. There were no leaves, no plant to be seen, so the people around him mocked him, saying, “This bamboo seed is never going to sprout.”
In the second year, the situation was the same. In the third and fourth years too, nothing changed above the ground. People told him, “You’re just wasting your time.”
But he didn’t give up — he kept on watering it.
Throughout those years, the roots of the bamboo were slowly spreading underground, building a strong foundation. From the outside it looked like nothing was happening, but inside it was preparing to grow.
In the fifth year, the bamboo suddenly grew incredibly fast — up to about 80 feet within just 6 weeks.
At that point, everyone was amazed at how quickly the bamboo had grown.
But in truth, the bamboo didn’t only start growing in the fifth year. It had been growing from the very first day. Those five years were the time it spent building strong roots.
The lesson of this story is —
In life, some successes can’t be seen right away. While you’re working hard, you may not see results and can feel discouraged. You may lose heart and want to give up. But in the places you can’t see, you’re building your experience and your foundation.
Success doesn’t happen suddenly — it’s the result of patience, belief, and daily effort coming together. Learning Chinese is exactly the same.
